I got it to work, but (surprisingly for solus) it seems atom is out of date and most plugins just don't work.
Update: I don't know what I changed, but not even sudo can open atom now
Some more info. Root can open it.

I have the same issue
We have it as a library because of zim. That is not the full program. It has a GUI and this is what I'd need to use.

The problem with cuda linux on must distros is that it depends on an older gcc. People tend to use it on a docker, or just stick to a really old edition of ubuntu, like 14.04. This is not good for desktop usage, of course.
I'm a data scientist who just moved to Solus. I can convince my entire team to move to it. But data science in 2016 needs CUDA; it's a no-go otherwise.
