I think it's pretty standard to have a git submission helper. OpenStack uses git-review for submitting to Gerrit. You could argue that hub is used for Github. And apparently arcanist is used for Phabricator (which is also written in PHP by the way). The only downside is that it appears arcanist needs packaging, which is really the only temporary con I see.
