Something in this week's update (27/07/2018) seems to have corrected this. I now boot to a normal display.

Ok, regarding my previous comment, I found a work around to at least get back into an X session - ssh in, kill xorg, then magically the greeter shows up. I'll log that as a separate issue.

Unfortunately, with the updates pulled today (July 20), I had the no video on boot problem again. This is a coincidence because I hadn't yet installed the Intel driver. I went ahead and attempted to install the Intel driver, reboot the machine, and still had no video. Thus far I've tried:
I personally haven't been running xorg-driver-video-intel since my comment on May 29th. After today's updates come down, I'll reinstall to check the status of this problem and report back.

Ok, I've tried a lot of things... surprised I didn't break something else along the way ? What ended up working was to remove xorg-driver-video-intel, which is apparently not needed on more recent CPUs. I did so, uninstalled 4.15, put 4.16.12 back and everything is humming along at the moment.
Ok, installed 4.15 and booted it - same problem. Apparently something else. Bizarre that nomodeset bypasses it, and 4.9 works. Maybe part of the graphics stack?
Unfortunately it doesn't look like 4.15 is installed anymore. I am able to boot into the LTS kernel (4.9), but it doesn't fully support my CPU or on board graphics.
