@brucehankins older intel quad core with mt 430 and MSI board. First thing I thought of every time blank, black Mailspring launched unusable was "theming." (Qogir Darl and Korla on Budgie). I wonder if @raenk shares any of these similar variables?

can confirm what raenk said. complete blackout when I auditioned email clients this week. terminal threw a lot of errors. launches from menu black, launches from terminal black. unusable. so uninstalled. if bypass works then disregard, I only posted to say I could replicate OP's problem.

2. Wait a minute or so
3. Log into a TTY (if you're not already dropped at one due to the failure of lightdm to start you should be able to switch to one with CTRL+ALT+F3)
4. cd /var/log
5. ls -ahl
6. Figure out which of the Xorg log files has the newest timestamp (should be within a minute or two of your current time)
7. cp NewestFileName ~/Downloads/
8. Reboot back into a working kernel and then pull the log file out of your downloads folder and upload it

after some monkeying around I added this to the referenced link above: "When I hit 'email scan' it gives me a pdf I can save. When I 'print to file' I have a pdf also. Technically it creates pdfs, but the arrow picture 'save' button and menu 'save' text are both nonfunctional for sure---"

how does one go about incorporating a plug-into an exisitng package like Iscan? You would need to disassemble the iscan yaml, rewrite, relink, lots of trial and error I suppose. Is it doable for a mostly layman? Roughly speaking that is. Thank you for any feedback.
