This problem still exists.

I have a Wacom Bamboo. xsetwacom --list devices shows the right things…
Wacom Bamboo 2FG 6x8 Pen stylus id: 14 type: STYLUS Wacom Bamboo 2FG 6x8 Pen eraser id: 15 type: ERASER Wacom Bamboo 2FG 6x8 Finger touch id: 16 type: TOUCH Wacom Bamboo 2FG 6x8 Pad pad id: 17 type: PAD
But the Wacom Tablet settings panel shows “No stylus found” even when I’m using the stylus as a mouse! No tablet appears as an input device in Gimp, Krita or Inkscape.

On my motherboard the boot menu is F8 (totally undocumented), very slow and randomly (not actually random) sorted. Now that I’ve set it up rEFInd is equally slow but at least I can just make the relevant entries appear.

That “fairly easily” depends a whole lot on your motherboard. Ubuntu has a PPA for it, so why not Solus?

Maybe I’m a little dim, but what was the problem with this? I’ve certainly used it from time to time in scripts.
