Random freezes with no error message
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Just like the title says, I've been getting random freezes on Solus KDE and my Huawei Matebook 14 AMD lately, the only thing that (sometimes) still works is the cursor; if there's any sound being played when a freeze occurs, my laptop goes into a sound loop. I always download and install all updates, so I'm running Solus 4.3 with all bells and whistles. If there's any way I can help by providing logs or terminal output, just let me know what to do and which commands to run!

From my experience, it looks like you're running out of memory. How much RAM does your computer have? Running any RAM-hungry tasks when this happens? (e.g. 20 tabs in your browser, playing Minecraft while a software is compiling, etc.)

Nope, none of the above, like I said, the freezes are utterly random. Sometimes they happen a few moments after I booted into the system and sometimes it can run for hours before they happen. My notebook's got 8GB of RAM, my 13 year old iMac, which also runs Solus Plasma, has only got 4 GB of RAM and never freezes (just like my desktop with 32 GB, also running Solus Plasma; never had a problem with these two).

I wonder if it's an AMD issue, as I've been having a similar issue where the UI would pause or freeze for half second or so every so often. Seems fine after a reboot but re-appears after a few hours. I notice that Discord constantly pesters me that I just plugged in my mic (I did no such thing) so I wonder if it's a more general issue as well. I first noticed it with the 5.13.0 kernel release.

when you NEXT login, after the issue, check the previous boots journal?

sudo journalctl -b -1

(-2 for the previous to that and so on.)

page down to the bottom, might reveal something.

That's what the output looks like:

nearly; thats the start of the journal, from when the os boot starts.

any entries about a crash will most likely be at/near the end, in RED.

use page-down to get there.

Good grief, you're right, sorry :'D. This looks like the section where things got serious:

really just a guess, but i notice....

...[MediaSu~isor #5:10469]
.
.
...[MediaPD~oder #3:10394]
.

does it ever happen when not playing music/video?

anything just before this all starts, in the journal, about starting music/video?

maybe incompatible/corrupt driver or hardware failure?

if you find a way to be able generate the issue on demand, try a live distro and try to force it there?

i'm not good enough at this to help. maybe wait to see if someone else comments.

i commented because i've got an issue with very similar features, but now i see NOT similar journal entries, i have been able to make it happen and found switching from the adm-pro to radion gpu driver fixed it.

I would have to observe that, crashes/freezes are so frequent now that I find it hard to make out a pattern. I almost always have some music running in the background. However, when that particular crash happened, I had been running a Youtube video on repeat for three hours to find out whether it might have to do something with media playback. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reproduce the issue. FUN FACT: My laptop actually crashed while typing this just a few minutes ago. No media playback going on. I am getting sort of desperate and am seriously thinking about moving on to another distribution although I really love Solus :/. Latest crash log looks like this:

@coffee_bean In this case you clearly ran out of memory. It seems like you have at least 13 Only Office processes running there. (oom-kill also nuked one of those when you ran out of memory)

Fair enough; however, I can't wrap my head around the fact that my workflow succeeds in messing up my comparatively new laptop while my ancient iMac just keeps on running.

Do you use Only Office on your iMac as well?

@Staudey Yes, exact same setup (software-wise) as on my notebook.

i've also been getting another type of crash, much more like this one...

traced to running webkit (memory hog) through flatpak (memory overhead) for extended periods, couple of hours. might be correlated to video playback.

i resorted to restarting the webkit app every so-often.
