Hardware Support DVB device Technisat CableStar Combo HD CI
Open, NormalPublic

Description

Request:
Hardware Support for DVB device Technisat CableStar Combo HD CI in Solus

Solus Forum thread:
https://discuss.getsol.us/d/5919-new-to-linux-traffic-password-hp-plugin-cheese-dvb-goldendict

Device specs:
https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TechniSat_CableStar_Combo_HD_CI
Technisat CableStar Combo HD CI

Firmware files (link from linuxtv article mentioned above):
https://linuxtv.org/downloads/firmware/#terratec
dvb-usb-terratec-h5-drxk.fw (already in place in Solus)
dvb-usb-terratec-h7-az6007.fw

Issue:
Related to https://dev.getsol.us/T9439
Licence allows redistribution of both "dvb-usb-terratec-h5-drxk.fw" (which exists in Solus already) and "dvb-usb-terratec-h7-az6007.fw" (does not exist in Solus yet).
It seems, a kernel patch is required. Yet the article from linuxtv is pretty old.

Temporary solution:
None. Didn't even dare trying anything described in the linuxtv article, due to lack of expertise.

Thanks for your help!

I'll look into the kernel side of this when I have a chance. I don't really want to redistribute the firmware of just a single DVB tuner in a dedicated package though, so we'll need a different solution there unless dropping it into place on your system is adequate.

I'm really curious if you can figure this one out. Downloading and moving firmware files from linuxtv to /lib/firmware is fine for me. Maybe, providing firmware bundle packages each vendor (e.g. Technisat, Terratec,...), or a dvb-meta-package might be practicable in the future. Depends on whether those firmware files need to be updated, as asked in my SkyStar request. I'm not sure, how many other Solus users will run my dvb devices, though. All the online feedback just says "There's no dvb support in Solus." and that's it to them, apparently, sadly. I wouldn't want to create unnecessary packaging work for the Solus team that distracts from more urgent tasks. Again, thank you very much for your help!
