Name: Sway
Open Source: Yes

Sway is a drop-in replacement for the i3 window manager, but for Wayland instead of X11. It works with your existing i3 configuration and supports most of i3's features, and a few extras.

Their 0.9 release is considered "pre-release" according to GitHub, and latest is an RC. Not landing until they have a proper release.

Due to a change in policy (more information coming soon), sway is now accepted for inclusion. As such, it has since been included in unstable for testing. It's very much a work-in-progress and I've discovered the following two issues:

  1. Despite installation of gdm, sway is not exposed as an option. Had to manually type sway from TTY.
  2. Password entry currently results in a lockup. It could be solely on my machine, the result of the default i3 configuration mixing with sway, or a separate issue that is yet to be discovered. This is frankly the largest blocker towards swapping out i3wm for sway. Testing and debugging is welcome.
