simple-scan: menu bar flickers and text scans get mashed up while saving to pdf
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

After fridays update (sudo eopkg up)I have theses 2issues with simple-scan:

a)
On each first scan after starting simple-scan, the simple-scan menu-bar on top disappears partly, the scan-in-progress indicator at the very left is displayed only partly an flickers.
Symbols in menu bar reappear if you hover the curser over entire menu bar or switch windows and switch back to simple-scan window.
Also when you press Crtl+s for saving and you then click on the bottom left on file format to change it, only current format is displayed in the list. The rest of the list is blank and other formats appear on hovering cursor over the listor moving list with up/down button.

b)
Much worse: scanning in text mode: scan looks ok in simple-scan, but the scan gets mashed up while saving it to pdf.
This does not happen for color scans.

For some reason the mashed up graysscan file is much bigger than the color scan.

Can you tell us what scanner you are using? This is probably related to sane-backends which is pretty large.

I am using a Canon CanoScan Lide 100.
But I am not sure if this is a sane-backends issue, since :

a) scan looks ok in simple-scan
b) scan does not get mashed up using simple-scan and saving to jpeg or png, only when saving it to pdf
c) scan result is ok on command-line:
scanimage -p --resolution 300 --mode Gray -x 210 -y 297 --format tiff > test555.tiff
convert test555.tiff -compress jpeg -quality 70 test555.pdf

ps: I believe there were other updates on saturday. I noticed this behaiour on saturday. so I can't really tell, what caused it.

I'm fairly confidents it's sane-backends since it's what generates the images and the PDF files for simple-scan and was updated this week from 1.0.27 to 1.0.29. Whereas nothing else related to simple-scan was updated this week.

Well, please keep in mind that I am not a programmer and don't really understand these things.
Since simple-scan itself got also updated this weekend, I did some testing.

I downloaded simple-scan-3.36.0 and simple-scan-3.36.2.1 from github and compiled both with current sane-backends version.
Both versions save color and grayscale scans to pdf just fine.
Though with simple-scan-3.36.2.1 the flickering in menu bar occurs like described in my inital post under point a), while it does not occur with simple-scan-3.36.0.

Maybe this information is helpful to you.

I think this is an upstream issue with 3.36.2 which in Solus repos was updated by this commit 0d1ef68b2355, rebuild against new version of sane-backends was one day before by this commit aa79efc672f6.
There are some reports in gitlab, like #170 and #179 which they confirm that the issue is with version 3.36.2 of simple-scan.
They claim that the issue is fixed in version 3.36.2.1. So we just have to update it.
Also a new version of sane-backends is out since yesterday.
