Whereas this is written in JavaScript so not exactly an improvement in my books. We also already have Bookworm, which is written in Vala + GTK3, so what is the value add of this specific software?

i saw now Bookworm, it's written for ElementaryOS.
Yes, Foliate is written in Javascript. I tried Foliate, it's very simple, most useful feature and fast, active development and are adding new features

That still doesn't explain any actual value-add.
