I am not a big fan of Synapse. Why not make suggestions for the Budgie or MATE menu to make this kind of software redundant?

I'm not a fan of anything that relies on Zeitgeist

I'm not a fan of anything that relies on Zeitgeist

Why?

@Coynmond because it's sole purpose is to monitor what you do. The intent is noble, but the potential abuses are staggering.

Some of the deps for this need to be rebuilt with gtk+-3.0 support before it can land. I did find out that zeitgeist is optional.

@DataDrake I don't find that a great argument, tbh. In that case you might as well remove some software from the repositories. For example, it is possible to install malware in Wine so Wine shouldn't be offered then. Pinta is depended on Mono, which in turn has ties to Microsoft, so not very trustworthy either. Tracker also has the potential to be abused yet it's offered by default in Solus because of Nautilus.
Just to name a few examples...

@Vistaus Tracker is used to index the content of files to make it easy to find things.

Zeitgeist is much more invasive in that it actively tracks your activity. If any other program did that without our knowledge, we would call it malware. That was the point I was trying to make.

You are welcome to set your own personal views on the security and trust associated with an application or library. But as a maintainer of a linux distribution I have both the right and the duty to protect users from unnecessary exposure to risk.

@DataDrake Well, Wine may be kind of my own thing but Tracker has been demoed to show how one can abuse it.

And Mono really isn't my own view because it's always been controversial. Look at the various global and local Ubuntu forums and on the Phoronix forum and see how many people don't trust it. Even some well-known people in Ubuntuland have been proposing for years to drop it because they feel like it's a risk for end users. So that's a global view, NOT my view.

Btw, you're right about Zeitgeist: I now see how it can be viewed as malware. Thanks :)

Fair point.

I'd like to have Synapse cause it's my favourite launcher. And I don't want another solution. And I even like Zeitgeist how it is.

I would like to use synapse, too.
Very powerful software.

Zeitgeist is in the repos anyway.

All, this has been Accepted for Inclusion so you don't need to defend it anymore. Someone will package it at some point.
