Dell Thunderbolt dock TB16
Open, Needs More InfoPublic

Description

Hello everyone,
I have some problems with my dock.

Every time I exit suspend, the dock lan network doesn't exist anymore.
I need to unplug/plug-back my dock for it to appear again.
It's not a bigdeal, but every time I unplug/plug-back my tri-screen display does not come back, i need to reapply any display configuration to activate then again.

Another problem is with usb. They doesn't work at all. Sometimes when I plug in my keyboard it works for 5 seconds to some minutes then doesn't work anymore.

Do you have some tips or workaround to follow ?

The dock spec is here :

Thanks

Just so that we have more information to help you out, in case it is related to the DE that you are using. What is the Desktop Environment that causes you this issue?

Hello @JeffLabonte,

Thanks for your answer.

I have the same error on Budgie and Gnome.

Have you disabled thunderbolt security in your laptop's BIOS? I'd also checkout this article which references that you might need to update the dock's firmware for a more stable experience in Linux.

Girtablulu triaged this task as Needs More Info priority.Apr 10 2019, 8:53 AM
Girtablulu edited projects, added Hardware; removed Lacks Project.

So, I just try to turn security off in Bios, and for now everything work.
But, it's a work around, is it safe to turn off security ?

Maybe try to look for an update of the firmware like @alecbcs suggested, maybe you'll be able to reactivate the security after the update

EDIT: it seems you can also add the dock to the authorized devices, see here

@Tzigamm It is already authorized.

I just come back from my break, and the usb shut off :/. But not the network problem, so it's a nice news !

I will try again the dock firmware update (last time it doesn't want to update. I have error when trying to update the asmedia usb controller. )

Everything work on windows 10 :(

So, after some time, the problem is still the same. Nothing change from disabled the security from the bios or authorized it from bolt. Usb lost connection after some times and lan disabled after sleep. (Does not happen on Ubuntu)

I will try the firmware update this day. Hope it will fix it.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

It's been a long time since your last response, is this still an issue? I've also got a Dell Thunderbolt dock and networking is fine after waking from sleep, both the ethernet and wi-fi connections.
