Fresh Plasma install is missing program icons
Open, WishlistPublic

Description

After installing the Plasma iso from the Full Sail blog post, all of the default system applications (such as System Settings, Dolphin, etc.) are missing their icons. There is an icon pack called SolusSC that seems to be the default, which is missing most icons. Installing the Papirus-Adapta icon set and switching to that fixes the issue.

As a note, I kept my old /home partition (which used the Solus Budgie defaults for icons) instead of nuking it all. Could that possibly have a bearing on this issue?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that after installing I did a full update, and the issue persisted.

The default theme should be breeze, are any of the following packages installed?

  • breeze-icons
  • breeze-cursor-theme
  • breeze
  • breeze-gtk-theme

All of those are, yes. They were not set as in use, however.

That's odd, something in your user config must be changing it. Could you try adding a new user and see what the default theme is for that user?

Creating a new user correctly sets Breeze as the icon pack in use.

Then there must be something in your local config overriding the icon pack :/

I'm not familiar with how Budgie actually does that however, so can't suggest how to help you fix it.

It certainly seems like there is a config somewhere messing things up; certain system apps still have broken icons, no matter what theme is in use. I'll go fishing, and post if I find anything.

Same happened when i installed Plasma from repo on my Budgie install. Install from ISO with clean partitions had no problems with icons.

I did a couple things, then relogged, and all icon issues seem to be resolved now.

What I did:

  1. Edited a GTK settings file at .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
    • It had outdated entries for the theme and icon pack settings. I doubt this one is relevant though, since they were from a pre-Budgie install.
  1. Cleaned out old directories for DE's that are no longer in use

I don't think that simply logging out before doing this would have done it, since I'm pretty sure I already did that, but I can't rule it out, either. I guess this can be closed, since the issue is no longer present. Maybe it'll help someone else down the road.

So if I'm reading correctly, you installed with a dirty home directory, which likely already had gtk settings. Therefore it wasn't using the defaults. The only alternative is to start deleting files or overwriting them from ~/ which doesn't sound like a good idea at all. If from budgie, would have been set to papirus which isn't installed on plasma ISO by default. Note that solus-sc-icons is a subset of papirus so may influence it being used in its place (or just happened to be what it picked in its absense).

I'm leaving this open for a bit, but I don't think there's anything to be done. papirus could be added to the ISO, but that's kinda working around the issue of an unclean install (which is always bad).
