Why should this be included in the repository?
pandoc-crossref is a pandoc filter for numbering figures, equations, tables and cross-references to them. It's very useful for writing academic papers in markdown, see this article for an example of its usage (under: Adding and referencing sections).

How many users will use this software?
All users who are using pandoc for writing academic papers and need to reference. Some of it is possible without this package but for example not referencing sections.

As this task has been marked Needs Maintainer for a month with nobody having stepped up to become maintainer, in addition to providing an acceptable patch for inclusion, marking as WONTFIX. Feel free to re-open when a patch has been submitted via the proper processes.
