Re-enable MakeMKV repo
Closed, WontfixPublic

Description

I noticed recently, that after a recent system update I lost access to the MakeMKV software without warning, and after consulting the Solus subreddit, a user believes the solus makemkv repo got disabled due to it being a blocker for a ffmpeg upgrade (I have no way to verify this claim), I was wondering if this is still the case or not, and if the repo could be re-enabled.

Or is the repo been marked in active because the software can't find the drive upon lunch unless you run `sudo modprobe sg``` beforehand?

I'm currently in the position of needing to use software that was previously installed on my system that got removed during a system upgrade *without* any prior warning, and being unable to compile software myself as it requires dependices unavailable in the solus repo. I just want to know why it got marked inactive and what it would take to make it marked as active again in the repo

Well you can use the search, can't you ? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Searching both makemkv and ffmpeg on this site didn't bring that up, nor did searching the keywords makemkv and solus (and limiting it to this year and/or this month), so you can't expect the user to be omni potent, eh?

So what's the way forward? Is it best to try compiling make now now since updates to the software have most likely been released since you "drop" kicked the repo out, or will we still be stuck waiting for the software to support the new ffmpeg version?

Searching both makemkv and ffmpeg on this site didn't bring that up,

Okay, so it's probably my computer! ๐Ÿ™‚

The way forward ? Well the issue is upstream, so you may want want to raise the issue there.

The MakeMKV git repository will not be re-enabled nor will MakeMKV be re-introduced into the Solus repository. MakeMKV is not going to be supporting ffmpeg 4.x, at least at the rate in which we're planning on adopting it, and there are concerns that it'll be a repeat issue for ffmpeg updates beyond 4.x.

 I searched both terms separately, and not together, I am fucking stupid

As for what JoshStrobl, that response makes sense, but damn I don't like the outcome. Oh well

Very old thread, but does this still apply?

I just built & installed makemkv 1.14.3 from source. Build dependencies are system.devel, qt5-devel and ffmpeg-devel (4.1.1), no problem at all.

Also I can see no functional restriction so far.

Good to know!

For anyone arriving at this thread looking for MakeMKV for Solus, the snap is now released to "stable" channel and it's working like a charm!

You will still have to run sudo modprobe sg prior to running the snap and you'll need to manually connect hardware-observe, once installed.

sudo snap connect makemkv:hardware-observe

I've been ripping my Bluray's all week on Solus!

sudo snap install makemkv
