We already have redshift, which does exactly the same thing. Recommended that you use that.
To be fair after checking out redshift, f.lux provides a lot more functionality. It has different lighting schemes, options to expand the color ranges, and even more indicator applet actions. It might be worth taking a look at.
So I know this is old but I think it's better to post here then to create a new post. I have now tried redshift for a while and it feels that it lacks the "power" of f.lux, the settings are not as advanced as of f.lux and the overall experience feels buggy. For me it starts and stops at random times. So please re-evaluate your choice of not including this for I would think it would help many people that use their computers in the dark.
I also have found redshift to be very buggy. It most definitely does start and stop at random intervals. So much so that I have stopped using it all together. Would love to see flux become available.
What's wrong with the built in 'Night Light' applet? Are you using Budgie or Gnome? It's been rock solid for me, on Budgie at least, and very well integrated.
I didn't even know that it existed. I will try this for a while and see if it can replace f.lux for me. :)
Will attempt a qualitative argument. The clones I've tried, even the nicely integrated one here, including on Android don't come close to the color filtering quality of f.lux. The clones give the impression that it's just a linear red/yellow color filter slapped on top of the screen. f.lux. has got it down to a science and for example understands that light in the green spectrum affects wakefulness as well. Also movie mode is a very useful compromise when you want to watch a movie without turning it off or having too awful colors.
Including the best in class software would provide an experience in line with Solus
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. And I should say my response wasn't intended as a down-vote to inclusion of f.lux, just noting the existence of Night Light as an alternative.
Not to mention the ability to have program-specific profiles is super useful. It comes in really handy when working in gimp, inkscape, photoshop (when I'm on windows), etc.... to have it auto disable when using certain apps where having the correct color profile is important. There's no need to manually disable it when doing these tasks.
I've also had x-flux on my radar for quite some time and per https://github.com/xflux-gui/xflux-gui/issues/45 they have released tarballs on GitHub: https://github.com/xflux-gui/xflux-gui/archive/v1.1.10.tar.gz
Opened for re-evaluation given new arguments and new release tarballs are now available.
I already indicated that we have redshift and there isn't really value add in yet another app that does essentially the same thing. If there are issues with redshift, those should be reported upstream. For desktops using Mutter, there is Night Light functionality and the Night Light applet in Budgie.
No offense meamt here, but "essentially the same thing" is not the same thing. F.lux adds a lot more functionality than either of the redshirt or night light. It's at least worth looking at isn't it? I think this dismissal is a bit too hasty. I mean, if we're splitting hairs here, flatpaks and snaps are essentially the same thing yet they're both being included. The value add comes from users being happy software they want can be used.
flatpaks and snaps might packages different applications and therefore have a real added value for Solus : perhaps one day you'll find f.lux as a snap but not as a flatpak or vice-versa.
I understand the difference. I was merely remarking on the "essentially the same" comment. Perhaps it was a bad example. Could have chosen many (media players for example) but went with this one because it was the most recent addition I could think of.
