I have a working package.yml, so if y'all accept this, I'll send that your way

Apologies, but what is Mastodon? It looks like Tumblr. Is it just a self-hosted/open-sourced version of Tumblr?

Basically, yeah. People seem to compare it more to twitter, though.

In addition to being self-hosted, all of the nodes can interact with each other. So there is a single "network" with many instances.

I've been running my own instance for about a year, now

How does this compare to the functionality provided by Whalebird (T6303), ignoring the fact that Tootle is a Granite-based client whereas Whalebird is Electron / nodejs.

I actually have not used whalebird so I can't say. I can try that tomorrow evening, though, and get back to you.

Great ! A great soft to use with Mastodon.
Please add it to the stable repos.

After having used whalebird, I have to say I really like the whalebird client's method of interaction. As far as feature support, they're pretty close. Whalebird supports mastodon 'lists' and tootle doesn't, but that seems to be the only real feature distinction.

That said, I do really appreciate that tootle is a native client, and that tootle is small and can get out of the way easily. Whalebird is great if mastodon is all you want to do, but if you want something to put on screen next to something else, tootle seems like a better option.

Another thing to note: they use the same form of authentication. Both of these clients attempt to open a web browser so you can authorize them with your mastodon account. This only works if your default browser is set properly.

I guess my second point is more concise as:

  • Whalebird for fullscreen mastodon experience
  • Tootle for split-screen mastodon experience

Neither is very good at the other's role

JoshStrobl moved this task from Backlog to Accepted For Inclusion on the Package Requests board.

@asonix I appreciate you taking the time to review both. I'm going to go ahead and mark this as accepted for inclusion.

Awesome, I'll submit a patch after work
