Apparently it's in the repos. Have you tried that?
In fact, everything required for wayland to functions seems to be present.

Wayland session for plasma isn't officially supported yet see here, but yes this is a bug none the less as plasma-desktop doesn't bring in qt5-wayland as a rundep.

clivejo added a comment.EditedMay 16 2018, 8:52 PM

@fagoatse yes, I have installed it and it is working fine.

As @joebonrichie says, it needs to be added as a runtime dep, which is the purpose of this task.

Peter mentioned he was having problems with it and I finally found a system which doesn't rely on *beeping* NVidia so I decided to give it a try. But it does need qt5-wayland installed to drop into the desktop.

Little value till the wayland session is included.

@joebonrichie When will Plasma Wayland session be supported on Solus? 'Cause I'd love to try it out, even if only as an experimental session (just like how you guys provide an experimental package for GNOME Shell Wayland session).

@Vistaus The session file is being deleted in packaging. You can create it manually and you should get the option on the sddm login

Create the following file - https://hastebin.com/unovewadoq.sql

You will also need to install qt5-wayland manually.

@Vistaus Hopefully soon because I'll be eager to try it with plasma 5.13

There is no plan to retain the session file till it makes more progress, everything is enabled and just requires a session file and qt5-wayland which makes it very easy to test (it won't even be removed on package updates).

@sunnyflunk I wasn't talking about retaining the file, I was talking about maybe with 5.13 making a package to enable it, just like you guys did with the GNOME Shell Wayland session.

Anyway, thanks @clivejo, I'll give it a try!

@clivejo I still get a blank screen. I've created your session file, installed qt5-wayland and rebooted but it boots to a black screen still. My graphics card is Intel (from 2015):

Sway works fine, so I'm not sure what's wrong with Plasma's Wayland session. I KNOW that it's not very mature right now, but I expected to at least boot to the desktop instead of a blank screen, esp. because I have Intel-only hardware.

Has anyone tested 5.13 yet? If so, does the Plasma Wayland session work there? I' ll try again if it works for me as soon as the 5.13 update hits the updates.

@Vistaus Well, it's getting there as you can see here - https://community.kde.org/Plasma/5.13_Errata

Unknown Object (User) added a comment.EditedJun 13 2018, 6:31 PM

It's finally working now with 5.13, but only barely. The panel context menu doesn't work, the network icon on the panel is stuck in the loading position even though it's properly connected, desktop background doesn't work, highlighting items in the Kickoff menu doesn't work (though the menu items itself do work fine) and most importantly: opening Dolphin and then closing it causes the session to crash and burn, which means that it throws me back to SDDM.

I know it's a WIP, but with all the work they've put in, I expected the basics to work by now, but apparently, even that's a bridge too far. Oh well, crossing my fingers for 5.14 then...

@clivejo Your Hastebin link doesn't work anymore. Could you share it again? 'Cause I want to give this another try on this brand-new laptop.

I too like to try it, but indeed, the link isn't working anymore.

So not only are you ban-evading, now you are shamelessly bumping your own comments. Are you going to behave this time?

I do not remember having a ban as I'm still relatively new here. Please forgive me if I gave the wrong impression, I'm still learning how this platform works. I only bumped this because I too like to try the Plasma Wayland session and give feedback to improve it. I did not know bumping wasn't allowed, gomenasai.

Oh you mean the person I "bumped" was banned? Now I understand. Okay so apparently, we are both Freelance Translators, but I do not see what else we would have in common. He has a different name and looking at his GitHub commits, he contributes many Dutch translations to FOSS. As you can see on my profile here, I have a Japanese first name. I was raised Japanese-American (Japanese mother, American father, hence I have an American last name), so I translate to/from Japanese (and rarely FOSS). I do not see how I would be related to that other guy.

But this is very much off topic, I'm really just here (on this particular issue, I mean) because I want to know how to enable the Plasma Wayland session properly and give feedback. Would you (or anyone else) mind re-sharing that Hastebin file?

So then it's sheer coincidence that someone with your username also speaks dutch: https://blog.iusmentis.com/2019/04/04/mag-je-als-sociale-bezorgdienst-een-id-verlangen-van-klanten/

and that you happened to create your account on the exact day that he was banned?

You'll forgive me if I'm actually wrong, but I have to take ban-evasion seriously.

I guess so. "The Vivaldi" is a semi famous term coined by Gloria from Modern Family which is aired worldwide and is very popular series, so any fan will know that term. Apparently, Modern Family has Dutch fans too (assuming that page is Dutch, I do not speak Dutch so I'll take your word for it).

I do not remember the date I registered, but it was a few months ago. I clicked on his profile and I do not see any "ban date", but I will take your word for it.

Sure, no hard feelings! You are just doing your job and I respect you for that, 私たちはまだ友達になります (we will still be friends) (=^-ω-^=)

@DataDrake Also this, from T7746

Well if that isn't red-handed, I don't know what is.

Sayonara, my Dutch friend 😆

My terminal wasn't formatting properly because my system was set to Japanese at the time because I speak both languages so I switch regularly. I did not think of switching back to English at the moment to copy the error message and Google Translate did not do a very good job at it and despite being a translator, this was too technical to figure out. So I searched for part of what I got from the translation and copied the output from the internet (I found it on Hastebin or Pastebin or whatever it is called). I then changed the username so that it would not look weird because my username is TheVivaldi. I missed the first part so I changed it after I had posted it. It only now occurs to me that it was the same guy who was banned.

Gomenasai (I am sorry) for all the confusion, I did not mean to make such a mess of things :(

Yea I'm not buying it.

I am sorry you don't believe me :( What can I do to prove to you that I really am who I say I am?

Interesting, and you just have the same terminal layout and computer name as the random guy you copied from?

https://dev.getsol.us/D5085#88723

Note: I have nothing against you personally, nor do I know why you were banned in the first place, but this is just too entertaining :)

That layout is a theme from Oh My Fish (a repository for Fish terminal emulator addons and themes) https://github.com/oh-my-fish/oh-my-fish/blob/master/docs/Themes.md. A lot of Fish users use their themes. And the computer name is very standard as that is the name of this distribution, anyone can think of that.

Alright, then what translation work have you done? I can't find any evidence of it.

Alright, then what translation work have you done? I can't find any evidence of it.

I work "offline" or so to speak: I help Japanese speaking tourists who come to the US and American citizens who speak Japanese, I translate their spoken conversations and any paperwork they bring.

Y'know I was hoping you would just come clean, but frankly this is embarrassing. Nightroad isn't an American name. It comes from Trinity blood and shows up on none of the Census records that I have access to from my various genealogy services which span dozens of countries. Jurai is a popular Japanese name that is featured in many anime. How else am I supposed to act when confronted by such an obvious pseudonym?

So far all you have done is come up with clever stories to rebuff any of your mistakes. If you are willing to come clean and behave as you have for the past couple months, I'm willing to let you keep your account. Otherwise I'm going to have no choice but to disable your account for ban evading.

I never said "Nightroad" was my last name, I said I have "an" American last name. Qbviously I am not going to use my real last name on the internet with NSA, China, Russia etc. spying and whatnot, so I picked a surname from my favorite Manga that would fit in with my Japanese sounding first name, which really is Jurai. But it is actually not entirely Japanese, it ts derived from "Juraj" as my father, like most Americans, has European ancestors and "Juraj" is the European version of "George" as you can see on e.g. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juraj ("The variants used in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe may be derived from a Slavonic similar to the Russian word юркий (yurkiy) meaning nimble, quick, handy. Pronounced "yuwh-rie" or "yuwh-rai". The English equivalent of the name is George."). The only reason it ends with a "i" is because as I said before my mother is Japanese, so she would've not accepted it if it didn't end with a "i" as no Japanese name ends with a "j". And believe me, you do not want to see my mother angry, she is very strict and a very proud Japanese :D

Again: I am sorry you don't believe me and that this topic has gotten out of hand. I did not mean for all of this to happen. All I wanted was to help out with Plasma Wayland. What else can I do to prove to you that I am who I say I am?

Alright that was your last chance. I know exactly who you are and don't appreciate being lied to. Have fun in the the Netherlands.

@Girtablulu Since you are the maintainer of Plasma and Qt, is there any chance we could get the Wayland support enabled again in plasma-workspace?

nope as long as solus doesnt support officialy Wayland I'mnot going to do it, but you can do it quite simple by yourself if you'd like to try it out
