Something break my wifi in between yesterday and today ...

Description

Hi, first report, so if I can improve it, just ask ;)

I have a MacBookPro11,3 and use the broadcom proprietary driver to use my Wifi card. Everything work fine, until this morning. I try to uninstall / install again the diriver many time, running depmod, check depencencies issues ... unable to make it work again after the system update from this morning.

If I go back the the history (eopkg), everything work fine again. I try again the update from the software center, but this time I install only the Required Updates ... but same behaviour, the broadcom driver stop to work. I can see the interface (wifi, physical interface, ....) but no way to connect.

The required updates does not contains the new kernel / driver package, so I was a bit surprise to have the same behaviour.

After running updates this morning (and rebooting) my network devices are unable to DHCP an address. Running dhclient by hand (as root) yields:

*** buffer overflow detected ***: dhclient terminated
Aborted

**Manually assigning an IP does work, and all network interfaces are detected properly.

Same as T6048. @JosephMart pls confirm you are experiencing the same issue. This is the only time I have ever experienced an issue in Solus. Who is the maker of your wifi chip? I am also experiencing a drop in ethernet as well?

I had to uninstall solus and switch to ubuntu due to this, I mentioned it this morning on IRC, nobody replied for the first 3 hours so I had to nuke Solus. Would be nice to get this fixed.

I am using Intel wifi and everything worked smooth as a butter prior to today's sync. I can't use ethernet either so

@jlmeeker I can confirm the behaviour

it's not related to the driver (no error in the dmesg on my side). But clearly, the DHCP client fails silently. So the wifi networks are visible, but the network connection failed during IP acquisition (confirmed by nmcli m). I can also confirm that wifi and wired network are affected.

In my updated packages, nothing related to the ISC ... the only linked library with dhclient are:

linux-vdso.so.1 (0x00007ffd2ddc5000)
libc.so.6 => /usr/lib/libc.so.6 (0x00007fddc92a0000)
/usr/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00007fddc9485000)

glibc is in my upgrade list ... maybe something is broken here.

Just tested dhcpcd and it works, where as dhclient throws the error in my first comment. A temporary workaround is to:

  1. Manually configure your NIC (cli or via NetworkManager connection editor)
  2. Install dhcpcd
  3. create /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/dhcp-client.conf with the following contents then restart NetworkManager:

dhcp=dhcpcd

Then Restart NetworkManager (you'll want to undo your manual connection settings first)

Testing the new package now... initial test didn't throw an error, rebooting to see how it is on a clean boot. Also, the "fix" I posted above didn't work 100% of the time, but running dhcpcd from the cli does.

That package fixed by DHCP problems (thunderbolt ethernet adapter). It also fixed my wifi (which wasn't fixed by the dhcpcd NetworkManager hack above). Seems like I'm back to normal now. Thanks @sunnyflunk !

I retry the upgrade today, and everything works.

Look like the dhclient, version: 4.4.1, release: 5 is on the stable channel now.

Yeah, I got it elevated due to this bug. I'll never understand why 0.01% of people hit this issue, but will close as it is now resolved in stable.
