Description

I'm using Solus Mate and the following PDF file doesn't show as well as in Firefox/Chrome:

In Atril I see most of the letters too close to each other:

In Firefox it looks much better:

And maybe Chrome shows it a little better than Firefox:

I've opened this PDF during a Live USB session of Linux Mint 18.3 Mate and Manjaro 17.1.2 Mate and it looks fine there, so I don't know why it's different on Solus Mate.

No problem here on Solus MATE here. I guess it uses a font that is not installed on your system. You can also check The settings Appearance -> Fonts. Perhaps something these was changed ?

I saw the same problem on a Solus 3 Mate Live USB.
I did not change the fonts in Appearance > Fonts:

In the PDF file properties, I see Times New Roman (not embedded) and other Windows fonts:

If a font is missing, then it's strange that it shows fine in Firefox and Chrome!

I also have TimeNewRoman* & Arial* not embedded and other fonts embedded.
I think you should dig in that direction : Do you have these fonts installed (via 3rd party, wine, etc...) ?

It's ok, I can just open any PDF files like this in Firefox/Chrome.

Would be interesting to know how this compares to Evince and perhaps MuPDF (-->T2156).

@mate-user it's working as intended. You don't have the fonts installed that it is looking for, but Firefox and Chrome bundle their own versions. That's why they display it correctly.

mate-user claimed this task.

@DataDrake Thanks, I can just open any PDFs like this in Firefox/Chrome.
