It's an elegant markdown editor designed for writers (as opposed to programmers). Most text editors that are available are tools designed for development and must be customized to support markdown. Currently the most comparable tools available in the Software Center are Focus Writer which does not support markdown and Ghostwriter that is much less powerful.
