Brlaser Printer Driver
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Since brother only provides .deb and rpm for its official printer drivers, there is an open source alternative for solus that works for several of their laser printers - I compiled it on Solus and it works fine with my brother laser printer. It should be considered for inclusion since we have nothing in the solus repo for brother printers right now. It is Open source, GPL2.

from the description:

Most Brother printers support a standard printer language such as PCL or PostScript, but not all do. If you have a monochrome Brother laser printer (or multi-function device) and the other open source drivers don't work, this one might help.

It is known to support these printers:

Brother DCP-1510 series
Brother DCP-7030
Brother DCP-7055
Brother DCP-7055W
Brother DCP-7065DN
Brother MFC-7360N

Is there any activity on this?

If there were progress, it would be noted here.

Pinging @sunnyflunk, seen this?

While the visibility of this likely will impact on its use (i.e. people won't know it's there and working out what printers it will actually work well with).

It would be good to know if this is a viable alternative, but I can't test that till I go home (so ages).

@sunnyflunk my printer is a multi monochrome printer mfc-L2740DW,so if you need a tester once again :)

I have one of the supported printers and i tested these drivers after compilation on solus.

I have no issue with adding this, but I don't think it will stop me needing to do repacks of the drivers is all

DataDrake moved this task from Backlog to Accepted For Inclusion on the Package Requests board.

If there was an update on it, you'd see an update on it.

For those whom are interested, I build the current release and git versions of the brlaser driver.

brlaserpackagesolbuild
Release v6LinkLink
git-9d7dddaLinkLink

package.yml are available if you prefer to build the drivers yourself.

@QORTEC please don't post links to google drive. Instead submit proper patches

@kyrios123 if I'm understanding you correctly you are basically are suggesting I add it into the Solus repos.

If so I have two questions;

  1. Does this task need a maintainer?
    • I don't have the time/skill to devote to maintain this package in a timely manner
    • Rereading the post it looks like @DataDrake waived the requirement
  2. Does Solus want this in their repos?
    • I was under the impression that Solus doesn't like to include niche, dropped, or slowly updated software into the repos.
    • The project maintainer will sometimes pause development anywhere from 4-12 months with no activity from said maintainer
    • Solus already does repacks of the Brother drivers, so it may be viewed as redundant

I was under the impression that there was a underlying reason that the drivers where not included in Solus for a reason, since its a "easy" build.
I'll happily open a project repository and submit for inclusion to the repos if there is no blocking factor.
