Event Timeline

Wire is already available in Solus, and it seems to have better features and security than Signal. Ticks all the boxes compared to other software: https://wire.com/en/

@mate-user They are not the same software and they appeal to a different population

@selfus I know they're not the same software, just pointing out that Wire seems to have better features.
@GotExx I noticed this story published yesterday, https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/software/signal-launches-standalone-desktop-application-for-windows-mac-linux/, but there is also a comment by GT500 on that page saying the following:

"The app for Windows installs in your profile folder, without asking, and without giving any option to change the install location...

In order to use the Windows app, you must install the mobile app on your phone, and register with your phone number... The Android app tells you that it transmits contact information to their servers, but claims it doesn't store that information...

This is supposed to be a privacy-conscience messenger service?"

@mate-user I don't see how the Windows remarks are relevant here, nor do I see a reason for this to not be included in the repository.

  • It's open source.
  • It has value add and offers functionality that other messengers in the repository do not provide.
  • It is distributable (since it's open source under GPL-3.0)
  • It is not server software
  • It is actively developed.

Ok cool, more variety for Solus users :) Nice to see it Accepted so quickly!

Love this on the android phone. Excellent messaging, voice call clarity and video calls. Going to see what the Linux desktop looks like soon.

JoshStrobl changed the task status from Open to In Progress.Nov 7 2017, 4:10 AM
JoshStrobl claimed this task.

Update: Have it built, just making sure the necessary rundeps are in place.

Needed to tinker around with the desktop file some but got things sorted so we can have a pretty icon rather than a derpy fallback icon for when the app launches.
