Update of Vim
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The Vim version in the repo is from 2013. Vim has recently enabled truecolor support for modern terminals, an updated regexp engine and many other features getting ready for the 8.0 release.

Vim.org is notoriously slow at updating anything. Perhaps getting build tarballs from git would be better?

While that might be the case, I'm not seeing any indication from the Vim team elsewhere that anything but 7.4 is stable. It also isn't apparent if the 7.4.x tarballs provided by them on GitHub are devel tarballs or not.

I don't know about the tarballs either Josh. It does seem like they push them out every few hours. Picking one and packaging from it, just to have a newer version with the newer features may be worthwhile. If no one else requests it though, why bother.

Maybe leave this ticket open for a few days, see if anyone else is interested (or cares) and comments. If there's no interest, I'll close it.

Yea I'll look into updated vim.

The one I built from was on the 5th, not quite a week ago Josh. I haven't had any problems with it, plugins, keybindings, everything works fine, no breakage.

Looking at the latest commits in the 7.4 branch, it seems most are small bug-fix patches. I think all the real effort right now is getting 8.0 out the door. Any of the tarballs should be a safe update, and probably the last I'd worry about until 8.0 hits stable.
