Need to get webview for wxwidgets

DataDrake claimed this task.Oct 7 2016, 8:21 PM

So. I have this building to where I can get a working command line client. However, I won't be able to build the GUI as it currently depends on Qt4 Webkit which is deprecated. If you are OK with a command-line package, I will finish packaging this. Otherwise I would prefer to close this.

I would prefer to have a GUI client and will wait until this is Qt5 ready. Is there any indication that they are working on it?

im fine with commandline! thank you for doing this, i was just like "thats too complicated for me..."

So I must have been moderately tired when I replied last. The problem was with webkitgtk, not Qt webkit. I'm working on getting that sorted and have made a bunch of progress today. It's going to take a little bit longer, but I think I will be able to wrap this up by the weekend.

Could this later be placed under office.scientific?

So I've got it running, mostly... it seems to be fully functional, but it has two bugs.

  • The task bar icon looks really ugly and when you right-click it the menu opens and closes instantly. So you have to hold the right mouse button, move to the point you want and release the mouse.
  • The BOINC manager keeps running after you close it and you can't reopen it afterwards. You need to manually kill the process or remove a lock file that's placed in your home directory. (GitHub Issue, BOINC forum)

I'm not sure if the team wants it published in that condition.

Casually prodding @DataDrake while going through requests.

I've been checking in here occasionally for a while, thinking something might eventually happen. The same version of BOINC has been available for 4.5 years yet when I try to run it in command line I still get:

username@small ~/Downloads $ sudo ./
use /home/username/Downloads/BOINC/run_manager to start BOINC
username@small ~/Downloads $ cd BOINC
username@small ~/Downloads/BOINC $ ls boincmgr boincmgr.48x48.png locale skins
boinc boincmgr.16x16.png boincscr run_client
boinccmd boincmgr.32x32.png ca-bundle.crt run_manager
username@small ~/Downloads/BOINC $ ./run_manager
./boincmgr: error while loading shared libraries: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I am *not* a command line expert but it would seem that this should be doable without a computer science degree. I wish the Solus community could easily contribute to BOINC projects.

islevegan@small ~/Downloads/BOINC $ ./run_manager
./boincmgr: error while loading shared libraries: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

You need to install wxwidgets2.8

Installing wxwidgets2.8 allowed this to work. BOINC is now working. Thank you. :-)

Would you mind committing your package so we can all make use of it? :)

Agree. We'd like to finally see this landed in the repo!

This has sat in accepted for inclusion for over 30 days. Clearly, there is a lack of demand for the inclusion of this software, nobody has stepped up to provide a completed patch, maintain it, and properly integrate it. Closing as a result. Feel free to reopen but only when someone offers a patch via our proper patch submission methods and volunteers to be maintainer.

@DataDrake I would be willing to package and maintain this. Could you catch me up on the progress so far in packaging this?

I bet quite a few users would be interested in using their Solus rigs to fight the pandemic if there were included! :)

how did u manage to run it?

This is not fun to package. For anyone who is interested, I have had success running this docker image:
Which exposes the GUI on localhost :8080
