Why should this be included in the repository? If we already offer similar software in our repository or third party, please provide information on what your proposed software does that our existing offerings don’t (differentiators).

Duplicati supports many different options for remote backup (e.g. FTP, SSH, online cloud services such as OneDrive, but most importantly, WebDAV). In my search for backup tools, this last option was often missing (e.g. I really like borg, but it lacks this option). While it's true that you could simulate a remote backup by mounting a WebDAV resources as a shared volume, to me this seems far less trivial and maybe even less secure as well.

A second advantage is the web-GUI, which allows you to avoid the command line interface if so desired.

I really wish there was a better Linux desktop backup than Duplicati, but there isn't. Remote, encrypted, GUI, automatic backups are ignored by most users, but really are not optional. I don't like Duplicati, (or Mono) but can someone recommend another end-user alternative that can do encrypted, GUI, automatic backups to a wide range of offsite storage storage providers?

  • amazon cloud drive
  • amazon s3
  • azure blob
  • backblaze b2
  • dropbox
  • google cloud storage
  • google drive
  • hubiC
  • jottacloud
  • microsoft onedrive
  • microsoft onedrive for business
  • microsoft sharepoint
  • openstacke simple storage
  • rackspace cloudfiles

I just installed Solus today, but not having a great end-user backup program available is probably a deal-breaker.

@LanceHaverkamp If all you want is to do regular backups, there is an alternative already in Solus' Software Center that works pretty well and has a nice GUI (it's actually a graphical wrapper for the tool Duplicity). It's called Déjà Dup. It also encrypts everything.

Thanks @pierrebonbon! I have looked at Déjà Dup, it would be a great option if the developer would support all the Duplicity back-end (server) plugins, but Déjà Dup only uses Gnome Online Accounts for the back-end, so you are limited to much more expensive consumer "drive" services, one in the US (Google Drive), and one in Europe (NextCloud). There are no true storage providers on Gnome Online Accounts, not even Amazon's S3, nor Glacier; let alone smaller storage providers, like Backblaze, Rackspace, etc. There's a temporary work-around to get to some of the traditional storage options, but they are phasing those out too.
Unfortunately the only serious, GUI, backup tool is Duplicati.

Hi @LanceHaverkamp , thank you for the full explanation on Déjà Dup, and more specifically on it's lacking the wide range of options that Duplicati offers in terms of storage providers. Well, let's just hope that Duplicati will be available soon.

This has sat in accepted for inclusion for 6 months now. Clearly, there is a lack of demand for the inclusion of this software, nobody has stepped up to provide a patch, maintain it, and properly integrate it. Closing as a result. Feel free to reopen but only when someone offers a patch via our proper patch submission methods and volunteers to be maintainer.

Sorry, guess I forgot to do this one. I'll take a look at this within the next week or two.

@DataDrake is this going to happen at some point?

The last release that wasn't considered canary, beta, experimental or dev was 2013.. If you'd like this software included please reach out to the developer to have them tag a release that is current and considered a stable release.

That's not 100% accurate. They are releasing canary builds on github and those are the officially supported builds until 2.0 is fully tagged.

Edit: I knew that when I accepted this.

It's been over a year without a stable 2.0 release. Closing this until that changes.
