Dutch Keyboard Defaults
Migrated to GithubPublic

Description

Hi there,

I'm testing Solus and the first issue i discover is that all of the pre-defined Dutch Keyboards settings are fail the keyboard layout. Normally i use English UK with death keys. But on installation it's not possible to choose this one. And after the installation when i change the layout the key-combine function is not working for example ' + e makes é ...

Event Timeline

I was just about to file a bug report on the Dutch keyboard layout list. I guess I don't need to anymore, but as an fyi if any developer is reading this, the default layout used on the majority of PCs in the Netherlands is US international with dead keys, not the British or "Dutch" one. I'd hate for this issue to be fixed, only to see one incorrect default be replaced by another incorrect one ;).

@javelinnl , i agree to that. I think i described the issue wrong. (after your comment i reread my post :) )

What i mention to point out, when you are in the Netherlands and using the Dutch (Language GUI) the default keyboard settings are wrong and you cannot change that during the installation procedure.

But while writing this answer i'm installing solus on a real computer instead of a vm, and i just discovered the little icon at the bottom of the keyboard layout selection menu i think i did not see the fist couple of times i was installing solus maybe it was not there on a older release i was installing from before. Or it was a problem with virtualbox i was testing the Solus os on ??

I just downloaded the latest ISO now and it looks like it has fixed already.

I really like the looks and feel of the GUI.

This has been in our installer for some time now. @javelinnl @sq4 are there any actionable items for this task or can I mark it resolved?

@JoshStrobl,

For me you can mark this as solved.
The tip from @javelinnl to select "US international with dead keys" was very helpful.

However it was not loaded correctly for testing.
The combination keys for example " and e makes ë was not working in the 'test your keyboard area'.
But after a reboot it works fine.

Thanks for the quit reply both.
Kind regards René

Yea unfortunately the language input doesn't dynamically change on the live ISO when choosing via the Installer, thus the keyboard entry will still be the same layout.

@JoshStrobl
Hey, that was fast. Uhm, can it be closed. Well, sure, it's not a big deal, but the standard options are, well.. wrong. When it detects my location, it gives a list of Dutch keyboard layouts. You'd think that would make sense, but the problem is that these layouts were used on typewriters, usually not computer keyboards. Except for macs I think. You can get to the right layout through the . . . option, but the US-int option should really be one of the defaults, if not -the- default. I've tested the setup on Ubuntu Gnome which uses the same installer, and it handles this aspect correctly.

When selecting "Find my location automatically" and going forward by pressing "Next" the wrong keyboard layouts are presented if you are based in the Netherlands.
Several Dutch keyboard layouts are shown which nobody is using - instead of US international which is the default in the Netherlands.

added note:
Sunnyflunk pointed me to the hardly visible three dots in the interface which allows to select any keyboard layout.
This works but it's not user friendly and confusing to present unused keyboard layout, and even a Fillipino keyboard layout.

  • This problem is also present in the latest "Patreon testing iso"

ps: when in doubt about the keyboard layout for the Netherlands, refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#Dutch_.28Netherlands.29

Just tested the second Patreon testing iso with the new and improved installer.

Still minor issues for Dutch users:

  1. When selecting "Find my location automatically" and going forward by pressing "Next" the wrong keyboard layouts are presented if you are based in the Netherlands.

Dutch and Fillipino keyboard layouts are not used in the Netherlands.
Everybody is using US international keyboard layout so this should be the default option.

  1. When going back you can't unselect "Find my location automatically
  1. It's not clear to everybody that the other keyboard layouts are hidden behind the 3 dots

The layouts are suggested based on the country. Coming up with Dutch keyboard layout for Dutch users doesn't seem that stupid to me.
Accounting for every last corner case is going to be nigh impossible - as long as users can then still get to the right keyboard layout, thats
the main thing (And it does show the right option for the vast majority of users.)

It isn't stupid at all to assume Dutch keyboards are actually used in the Netherlands but they are not.
Not at all.

The Dutch layout was used on old typing machines. The last time I have seen a keyboard with a Dutch layout was attached to an IBM OS/2 server, like 20 years ago.

Don't trust me on this, just lookup wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#Dutch_.28Netherlands.29

Another way to illustrate this:
keyboards with a Dutch layout aren't even sold in the Netherlands. See for example the biggest webshop in the Netherlands:

Same on the pricewatch of the most popular tech website: https://tweakers.net/categorie/530/toetsenborden/producten/
They are offering US international or Belgian Azerty for Flemish users (which is a variation of the Dutch language).

Not sure about other Linux distributions but Ubuntu server texts installer correctly defaults to the US layout if the Netherlands is selected as location

VirtualBox_ubu_15_08_2017_14_32_16.png (600×800 px, 11 KB)

even when selecting the dutch language:

IMHO
US international is clearly the default in the Netherlands and should become default in Solus for Dutch users.
The legacy Dutch keyboard layout should be hidden behind "..."
this would be the most user-friendly and the "sane default"

I can confirm that this issue still exists.

@ikey But you don't understand the issue. US International (with dead keys) is the default keyboard layout on ALL keyboards in the Netherlands and that has been the case ever since the very first computer keyboards were sold here (with a few exceptions, but those were corner cases). So the installer should suggest that layout, not the Dutch layout, which has never been used on any keyboard. Which means that coming up with the Dutch layout IS stupid, because that layout has never been used since the typewriter era. So unless we can install Solus on typewriters, the default should be changed to US International with dead keys. It's not very user-friendly, esp. to newcomers, to present the wrong layout.

I bought a ThinkPad E480 in Netherlands and I had to set the keyboard to English US (euro on 5).
