I agree it would be nice to move to 3.2 branch.
A few software require newer version of ffmpeg to be upgraded (like mpv for instance)

This isn't landing yet until we've ensured that every item compiles against ffmpeg3. Right now the biggest blocker is VLC. @Justin has done some prior work validating other items however.

VLC is the only blocker but will be until VLC release a 2.2.5 or get 3.0 to stable release status.

@Justin I have added a patch for VLC because nobody knows when v3.x will be released

Why is vlc even the default player instead of mpv?

The next ISO snapshot will be having GNOME MPV as the default. But I fail to see how your question is relevant for this task.

Because it's blocking a major piece of software. VLC should be offered statically linked to ffmpeg.

It isn't blocking, read the parent task. And regardless of whether it is the default, it'll use our ffmpeg.

There is no blocker, and VLC for *existing installations* is the default player. For *new* installations, it won't be. So yes, all affected components must be rebuilt.
Which I will do, give me time.

I'll be able to start these bits off in about another hour, finishing up work atm. I might as well attack gstreamer update after..

So I'm gonna need to redo this patch because it no longer applies, unless you get to it before me

Here is the patch redone.
