Nautilus .desktop files patch
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I know this is probably crazy suggestion, so please forgive me if this is bad idea.

You have probably read the thread on Reddit about File Manager "exploit".

I know this is 100% upstream design decision and little to do with Solus Project and not exactly groundbreaking "exploit".

Would it be a good idea to temporary patch Nautilus 3.22 to always show .desktop file extensions until the upstream at least address this "issue"?

I think this could be a good PR for Solus.

I saw this on reddit. Is there any talk upstream about this issue? If so would you mind linking that bug report?

We're not using Nautilus 3.22 so this doesn't apply to us. They already have a patch however, so when we do upgrade to Nautilus 3.22, assuming there isn't a new point release out already, we can always land the patch.

I don't think this only applies to Nautilus 3.22. I mentioned 3.22, since it was rolled back in Solus because of other issues. I thought when Nautilus update would land, a simple patch could fix this "exploit" (if upstream didn't do it). I didn't know how long would it take to update Nautilus 3.22.

At the time I posted this, upstream didn't address the issue, but now that they have, it is probably kind of pointless in my opinion.

I posted this issue in a heat of a moment when the "news" came up on reddit. Because it got a lot of attention I thought patching before upstream could be a good PR for Solus.
