Some games are miscategorized in the Software Center
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I've noticed that some games in the software center seem to be in sub-categories/genres that do not accurately match the content of the game itself.

For instance, the games;

  • openjazz
  • hedgewars
  • opentyrian
  • supertuxcart
  • endless-sky
  • neverball

Do not fit well within the Arcade Games category, a genre which usually conjures up the idea of simplistic games such as Space-Invaders or Frogger.

I also believe that a few more genre/sub-categories would need to be created to best showcase and describe the games contained within the repository. These being;

  • Racing Games
  • Space Sim Games
  • Sports Games

This is not currently a big issue due to how few games are currently within the repositories, but doing this groundwork now should make things easier in the future, as Solus gains popularity.

Finally, I would recommend the aforementioned games be categorized as follows;

  • openjazz - moved to Platformer Games
  • hedgewars - moved to Strategy Games
  • opentyrian - moved to Action Games
  • supertuxcart - moved to the newly created Racing Games
  • endless-sky - moved to the newly created Space-Sim Games
  • neverball - moved to the newly created Sports Games
  • naev - (currently in Action Games) moved to the newly created Space-Sim Games

But anywho, that's just my 0.02¢ :)

I'm not sure what to tag this suggestion as (maybe Plumbing?), so I'll leave it blank. Feel free to change it to whatever is appropriate. ^.^

So there is another thing to consider here...

Honestly, how many Space-Sim and Racing Games do you think we're going to get? :) A mere handful - I'm not sure they really warrant a new category yet.. ? Yay/nay? :P

That's a fair point :P

In which case, I would limit my recommendations to existing categories:

openjazz - moved to Platformer Games
hedgewars - moved to Strategy Games
opentyrian - moved to Action Games
endless-sky - moved to Action Games

Thanks for the quick response ^.^

I agree with this. I prefer specific categories (over too broad ones) which allow me to quickly find what I am looking for. Given the current speed with which new packages are added to the repositories, I don't think that category fragmentation is really an issue. I'd rather be worried about having to scroll through overpopulated categories (such as the Office category). I'd usually go with https://linuxappfinder.com/games categorization system but in this case I think @Commander-Zal suggestions are even better.

Not going to create new categories, but I will shift some things around so that they make a little more sense.

Alright, made the following changes:

  • flightgear -> games (due to lack of sims)
  • openjazz -> games.platformer

The others I'm going to leave alone for now. If people have trouble finding them, we can shuffle them some more.
