Why we should include this into the repository, i.e. what does it do that the alternatives do not?

It is a critical tool to aid in application development to understand allocations. The GUI provides very intuitive graphs & flamegraphs for tracking allocations and doing root cause analysis.

Is it open source?

Yes. I've already packaged this, I can submit the patch once accepted.
