Ran into the same problem using Budgie. It started last sync when we updated libx11 to 1.8.2
Firefox as well as Chrome just hard freeze multiple times per day and havr to be closed via System Monitor.
Most notably when copy/pasting text or when trying to "Save as" pictures

The actual new version is 1.8.2. (we had 1.8.0 for much longer already)
Can't say I've experienced any such issues, but I could revert that troublesome commit to be on the safe side. As there is a fix-up commit for it now too, it seems the logic behind it wasn't quite right anyway. Though that fix alone doesn't seem to be enough to mitigate the freezes/crashes, according to comments on the upstream bug ticket. So a revert of the original commit would make the most sense.
