Fixes T9697. Re-enable the Gevolution plugin. Small back end updates.

Test Plan

Launched pidgin
Verified it connected successfully to existing jabber and Google Talk accounts.
Verified messages were successfully sent and received.
Verified that an Office Communicator account gets the expected SSL error when trying to connect (I don't have an actual Communicator server so this is expected)
